Top 5: Romances that ruined me for Christian Grey

Fifty Shades Darker, the movie, is set to release tomorrow and no, I will not be heading to the cinema. *Braces for the backlash of millions of Fifty fans*

I admit it. Fifty Shades of Grey didn't hit the mark for me. I never felt compelled to give Fifty Shades Darker a try.

Here are the top five romances that ruined me for Christian Grey. (Don't miss #5.)

(Trigger warning!)

Breaking Free by Cherise Sinclair

Masters of the Shadowlands 3

There is one name in BDSM romance that I hear over and over again: Cherise Sinclair. Her books effortlessly achieve what FSoG tried to emulate: Dark stories. Emotional characters. REAL FEELINGS.

My personal winner: Breaking Free. Book 3 in the Shadowlands series.

A sadistic husband left Beth scarred, inside and out. Only at the Shadowlands BDSM club does she feel like a woman. But her fears limit her to Doms who won't overwhelm her--the very ones who cannot arouse her. The Master of the Shadowlands gives her an ultimatum: accept the Dom he assigns or lose her membership. The last thing Beth wants is a ruthless, powerful Dom, but that's just what she gets.

Asked to take on a problem sub, Nolan sees the issue immediately--although truly submissive, the little redhead is too scared to relinquish control and her Doms have let her get away with it. That will change right now.

As Master Nolan takes Beth under command, compelling her submission, she's terrified, but the experienced Dom brings her pleasure, not pain. His only demand is that she never lie to him. Under his capable hands, her body comes alive, and she begins to heal. As he pushes her limits, she learns to trust…and then to love. And she realizes he is beginning to care for her in return.

But now her cruel husband has found her, and Master Nolan discovers she's been lying and lying and lying.

(Already read the book? Protecting His Own is a recently released follow up novella where Nolan and Beth pursue adoption. Get it on: Amazon | iBooks)

To Command and Collar by Cherise Sinclair

Masters of the Shadowlands 6

One of the darkest books in the series.

Working with the FBI to capture human traffickers, Master Raoul scores an invitation to a slave auction. To his surprise, one slave is the kidnapped friend of a Shadowlands submissive. Although Kim's body is scarred, her spirit is unbroken, and he can't leave her behind. Ruining the FBI's plans, he buys her.

Kimberly's freedom has come at a devastating price: the other women are still imprisoned. Desperate to help the Feds locate the traffickers, she agrees to pose as Master Raoul's slave. Although wearing a collar again is terrifying, Kim starts to heal and then to blossom under the powerful Dominant's care.

"Submission." It's what she's been drawn to--and fled from--her entire life. She has escaped the slavers who captured her body. Escaping the Master who has captured her heart will be far more difficult.

Master of the Mountain by Cherise Sinclair

Mountain Masters 1

A slightly easier read, this book is great for genre newbies.

When Rebecca's boyfriend talks her into vacationing at a mountain lodge with his swing club, she quickly learns she's not cut out for playing musical beds. Now she has nowhere to sleep. Logan, the lodge owner, finds her freezing on the porch. After hauling her inside, he warms her in his own bed, and there the experienced Dom discovers that Rebecca might not be a swinger...but she is definitely a submissive.

Rebecca knows that no one can love her plump, scarred body. To her shock, lodge owner Logan not only disagrees, but ties her up and shows her just how much he enjoys her curves. Under his skilled hands, Rebecca not only loses her inhibitions, but also her heart.

Damaged from the war, Logan considers himself too dangerous to be around the enticing little sub. He sends her away for her own safety, not realizing she believes she has once again been rejected because of her size. As Logan's mountains echo with her voice long after she's gone, he realizes she's taken his heart with her. But when he arrives in the city to reclaim her, Rebecca's phone has been disconnected and her apartment is empty...

To avoid confusion: This Mountain Masters book has an updated cover on Amazon. I prefer the old one. :)

Master of the Abyss by Cherise Sinclair

Mountain Masters 2

The second book in the Mountain Masters series is an entertaining mix of sex and suspense, complete with a feisty heroine.

On the mountain, the watcher seeks out evil women. And then they die.

Two years ago, when Jake Hunt uncollared his slave, she committed suicide. Guilt-ridden, he will commit to a woman for one night only, devoting his energy to a mountain lodge that caters to a BDSM crowd.

Kallie Masterson is tough. Unwanted as a child, she worked hard to become a wilderness guide. She’s proud of who she is, and hurt that Jake frowns on her for acting like a man.

After rescuing the macho guide from a bar fight, Jake is stunned that the ugly men’s clothing hides a warm, responsive woman. A submissive woman. When guide business brings her to the lodge on BDSM night, and she is obviously aroused by the play, Jake takes the little sub right into his world of pain and pleasure. He warns her: one night only. But she responds so beautifully -- so joyously -- under his command, that one night soon becomes two, then three...

Then a missing hiker reminds Jake of his past lover, and he realizes he’s become too involved. He pulls back.

Meanwhile, the watcher on the mountain has rendered his verdict: Kallie Masterson is evil. The sentence: Death.

Like the previous book: This Mountain Masters book has an updated cover on Amazon. I prefer the old one. :)

Slave to Love by Nikita Black

Standalone Erotic Thriller Noir

The only 'non-Cherise' book in my line-up is a standalone and a serious mindbender. The author took ten years to write the book. Ten years to craft an unbelievably twisted hero. Are you ready to come over the edge with Mick 'The Iceman' McGraw?

Special Investigations Section Officer Caroline Palmer is not into whips and chains…

That is, not until Homicide Detective Michael 'Mick' McGraw—better known as The Iceman—leads her undercover into a secret world she never dreamed existed. He says they are tracking a sexual predator, a sadistic killer who preys on adventurous suburban couples. But Caroline knows Mick is looking for something else.

Something much more dangerous…
